Love Your Neighbourhood Scheme donates £1,000

In July, Southern Co-op ran a Charity Awareness Week [24-30 July] and to kick off proceedings they donated £1000 to each of the company’s charity partners, of which Home-Start Bracknell Forest is one. The donation comes from the remainder of money raised by the company’s ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme, which is funded by the 5p single-use carrier bag levy, much of which has already been allocated to communities and causes in the south of England. A big thanks to @southerncoop #LoveYourNeighbourhood

Making a dash for Home-Start

One of the families we supported took part in a trolley dash at the opening of The Entertainer store in Bracknell on Saturday. Zofia and one of her daughters took part in the event before the store opened and took home over £250 worth of toys.

LEGO movie stars will be coming to celebrate the opening of a new toy shop.

The Entertainer in the Lexicon will be opening on Saturday August 19, less than a month before the rest of the development throws open its doors for the first time.

To celebrate, characters from the Lego Ninjago film, Kai and Lloyd, will be making an appearance at the store alongside Bumblebee from Transformers.

Before the store opens for the first time, it will play host to a special trolley dash with children from charity Home-Start Bracknell Forest.

Tessa Dove, Scheme Manager of Home-Start Bracknell Forest, said: “We are thrilled to have been offered the opportunity to take part in this exciting event and look forward to seeing what the new store has to offer.”

The popular children’s toy shop becomes the second of the stores in the Lexicon development to open, after Marks and Spencers got the ball rolling last month.

As part of a promotion for parents, the first twenty families through the door on Saturday morning will receive a gift card with anything from £5 to £100 loaded on it.

Christian Laville, store manager at The Entertainer in Bracknell, commented: “We couldn’t be looking forward to the Grand Opening more, it’s a great chance to see the packed store for the first time, have lots of photos with favourite characters, and most of all have fun.”

Home-Start Hikers 3 Peaks Challenge

To celebrate their 50th birthdays this year, friends Julie Pizzey (administrator for Home-Start) and Neil Coupe have decided to complete the 3 Peaks challenge later this month and have persuaded a whole group of friends to join them. The challenge involves climbing the 3 highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) – all within 24 hours!

Each team member has their own reasons for taking part but all have children and understand the many challenges faced by parents in bringing up a family. They want to help Home-Start to support local families facing difficult and demanding circumstances, who may be feeling overwhelmed and feeling that they have nowhere to turn to.

The team have been training regularly together since the beginning of the year and recently visited Snowdon for a practice ahead of the main event. They aim to raise £3,000 as a team, which will allow Home-Start to provide support for 6 families for around 6 months each. The team have already raised almost 60% of their goal but are looking for more sponsors to help them reach their target.

Home-Start Bracknell Forest was invited to cut the ribbon and open The Southern Co-operative’s new food store on Forest Road, Binfield and received a £500 donation on Sunday 30 April.

Family support charity Home Start Bracknell Forest cuts the ribbon at the new Southern Co-operative store in Binfield

Tessa Dove, Scheme Manager at Home-Start Bracknell Forest said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as the very first charity partner for the new store. The residents of Binfield have always been very supportive of the work we do with young families locally and this donation of £500 will help us to provide ongoing support and training to a Binfield volunteer helping local families. We look forward to continuing our partnership with our Southern Co-operative colleagues and customers in Binfield over the coming months to help raise awareness, funds and recruit more volunteers.”

The Southern Co-operative’s new store, situated on the former Daruchini Restaurant site, is home to a large range of fresh produce and chilled food options and a Local Flavours range with food and drink sourced locally.  The community food store will be open from 7am until 10pm, seven days a week with allocated customer parking and a Paypoint facility.

Tim Spargo, manager of the new store, said: “We are very excited to be opening this new store in Binfield and we are supporting Home Start because we feel that their support for young families in the area chimes with our ethos of ‘more inclusive neighbourhoods’. We’ve had a great opening day so far and we look forward to meeting more of our customers soon.”

The fundraising partnership forms part of The Southern Co-operative’s community engagement programme, ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’. This initiative addresses four key social themes, as identified by a survey of over 4,000 members and colleagues, for promoting: ‘Greener Neighbourhoods’, ‘Healthier Neighbourhoods’, ‘Safer Neighbourhoods’, and ‘More Inclusive Neighbourhoods’.

Charities and community groups can also apply for cash donations or goods in kind through the ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ scheme which is funded by the 5p single-use carrier bag levy. For more information on how to apply, please speak to your local store’s manager, or visit: http://www.thesouthernco-operative.co.uk/makingadifference/love-your-neighbourhood/.
